TEXAS, U.S. - As part of its plans to expand in the U.S., Apple has unveiled plans to build a massive new campus in Austin, Texas.
Unveiling its major plans to expand its U.S. operations on Thursday, Apple said that it will build a new $1 billion campus in North Austin.
The new campus, spread across 133 acres, is set to become the iPhone maker's third campus in Austin.
The company said that the new campus will be located less than one mile from Apple's existing Austin facilities
Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a press release, "Apple is proud to bring new investment, jobs and opportunity to cities across the United States and to significantly deepen our quarter-century partnership with the city and people of Austin."
The new campus is expected to make Apple the largest private employer in the city.
Currently, Apple hires 6,200 employees in the city and has said that it is expecting to accommodate 5,000 employees at the new campus at first.
Apple has said that the new campus will ultimately have a total capacity of 15,000 and will house a range of jobs in engineering, R&D, operations, finance, sales and customer support.
The company said that the new facility, like all the other Apple facilities across the world, will run on 100 percent renewable energy.
Commenting on Apple's announcement, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said in a statement that Apple's decision to expand in Texas "is a testament to the high-quality workforce and unmatched economic environment that Texas offers."
U.S. expansion plans
Apple's expansion plans have been unveiled months after it committed to $350 billion of investment into the U.S. economy.
While the new Austin campus is the biggest part of its expansion plans in the U.S., Apple plans to simultaneously expand operations across several other U.S. cities too.
Currently, the company employs 90,000 people across the U.S., with more than 1,000 employees in each of the 16 key states.
The company said that it is planning to grow its employee base across Seattle, San Diego, and Culver City to 1,000 at each of these three offices.
Further, Apple said that over the next three years, it is planning to expand its operations in Pittsburgh, New York, and Boulder, Colorado.
So far this year, Apple has added 6,000 jobs to its U.S workforce and is on track to create 20,000 jobs across the country by 2023.
Over the next five years, Apple has said that it plans to invest $10 billion in U.S. data centers.
It will invest $4.5 billion this year and next year.
The company, which said that it is planning to expand its data centers in North Carolina, Arizona and Nevada, said that its newest data center would be located in Waukee, Iowa.
