13 April, 2022 - Ottawa, O.N. - Department of National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

The Government is making investments to ensure more Canadians have access to safe and affordable places to call home. These investments are delivering results in communities across the country, including in the Niagara Region.

Today, Minister Anand was in the Niagara Region with PS Bittle and MP Badawey. The Minister toured an affordable housing building that the Government funded through the Rapid Housing Initiative, and to discuss new investments in Budget 2022 with stakeholders and members of the community that will support even more affordable housing projects into the future.

Through the National Housing Co-Investment Fund, the Government has helped Canadians find a safe place to call home. One of those projects is the YWCA Oakdale, which is a 24-unit affordable housing building at 176 Oakdale Ave. Budget 2022 proposes to provide $1.5 billion over two years, starting in 2022-23, to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation to further extend the Rapid Housing Initiative. This new funding is expected to create at least 6,000 new affordable housing units, with at least 25 per cent of funding going towards women-focused housing projects.

The Minister also met with the Mayors of Welland, Thorold and St. Catharines, Niagara Regional Chair - Jim Bradley, the Chair of Niagara Regional Housing - Gary Zalepa, the Niagara Regional Housing CEO - Donna Woiceshyn and Regional Councillor Leanna Villellia to discuss affordable housing in the Niagara region and the measures outlined in Budget 2022.

The Minister also met with the UCC Niagara Region Branch President to learn about the work that they are doing to support Ukraine, and reiterated Canada's commitment to continue to provide military and humanitarian support to this end, including through Budget 2022's investment of $500m for further military aid for Ukraine.
